Becton Dickinson Corporate Headquarters
Franklin Lakes, NJ
Design of the headquarters encompassed locating a new suburban corporate headquarters building with parking on an idyllic 125-acre rolling farmland site with views to distant mountains in the south. The project presented many challenges, including the conception and development of an elegant, experiential and efficient corporate campus on a limited budget, and the site presented physical challenges, including a significant amount of grading in order to accommodate the structure, parking and existing hedgerows. Additionally, a formal ‘forecourt’ of wildflowers was added in a circular driveway intersecting the hedgerow and creating a dynamic composition. The broad scale of fields, hedgerows and views respond to the scale of the building, while smaller gardens with shrubs and perennials are inserted next to an employee lounge and cafeteria to respond to a human scale.

The purpose of this project was to locate a new suburban corporate headquarters building with parking for an idyllic 125-acre rolling farmland site with views to distant mountains in the south. The building houses corporate offices, manufacturing and research areas in use 24 house a day and requires parking to be close to the building. The perception and reality of this site was recognized early on in the process; natural features inherent in agricultural land can be used to shape the design and mitigate the effects of a large corporate building on a pastoral site utilizing a modest budge. The circular entry drive is a formal concept, but in a subtle approach to the larger landscape, it is filled with a meadow of wildflowers. Views from the adjacent state highway and regional airport present a facade of a farming region. A jogging path was added along the hedgrows and runs through the site including additional acreage to the south acquired by the corporation after the project was begun.
