The small landscape was divided into rooms to correspond to the interior spaces of the house and develop the illusion of a larger landscape. Subtle changes in the planting palette and plant forms defined the outdoor.  Full design services began with Master Planning for a four-acre site in an island community of summer homes. Organization of the property and coordination of indoor and outdoor spaces was achieved by way of formal axes. The primary axis extends through woods along a perpendicular gravel driveway to an arrival court and through an elevated apple bosque to the front door. Crossing the central hall of the home, the same axis extends on the waterside through a covered porch to a grand terrace with an inset lily pool.

Our design embraces the concave form of the house, connecting four distinct terraces with a series of spiraling bluestone steps and landings.  A Great Room flows onto the upper terrace, which accommodates larger groups for entertaining.  The lower terrace exists four feet below, and is used for barbecuing and intimate gatherings.  It is designed to merge with the adjacent outcrop that was protected-in-place, expanding the usable terrace space.  At the edge of this space, retaining walls are pinned to steep ledge, providing a basin for topsoil and screen planting upon the ledge.  Outlets are provided in the stone to ensure unimpeded drainage.  From the lower terrace, stone steps spiral ten feet down to an overlook. Retaining walls pinned to ledge help to ease the descent and form pockets for planting.

Comprising 200 acres along the coast of Maine, the estate displays a variety of landscape types. Open meadows border mixed woodlands, while within the woods lie wetlands, bogs and a pond. Beyond lies the rocky coastline broken by small arcs of sand. Over the years, a wide variety of projects have been jointly conceived by the client and the designers. The work has included an entry drive curving through fields and wild flower meadows, mandala entry gates with inset cast lotus blossoms, a seaside pool with special weir edge overlooking the ocean, a pool terrace with a pergola as backdrop, night lighting near the house, coordination of a removable tensile structure used for entertaining and a series of jogging paths which delicately traverse the woods and wetlands with minimal impact to the sensitive environment.

Located along the seashore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, this private residence line on the peninsula of Great Island.  Inspiration for the design language was developed from the client's passion for and extensive knowledge of Japanese landscapes, and the site's inherent beauty.  The task of seamlessly incorporating two distinct cultural landscapes, tat of Japan and New England, initially considered a challenge, was to be resolved in the choice of materials.  The refined, understated elegance of Japanese gardens was to be expressed through a regionally inspired selection of New England wood and stone.  The coastal conditions contribute to shaping the site in a manner that twists and stunts the vegetation, quite appropriate in a Japanese Garden.  This offers a sculptural presence for the garden rooms.  A Sunken Garden, more traditional in nature, occupies a portion of the site immediately adjacent to the Japanese-inspired gardens, thus providing a dramatic shift in charater as on passes through the garden gate.
